Fall 2002 Match Report

LAU Championships

Nashville traveled to Savannah with 15 players and picked up two players from the Florida Union (John and Martin) and one from the Georgia Union. It was a blessing in disguise since the Vulture went down in the second half of the first game against the Deep South. Anyway, we beat the Deep South Union 21-13 and defeated the Palmetto Union 78-0.

The first game against the Deep South saw Nashville make a lot of mistakes and penalities. I myself had several penalties (a couple were marginalbbecause it is my ball) and we did not take advantage of the penalties awarded to us. Great effort by all especially Chris Gower for slotting home several penalty kicks.

The Palmetto game saw Nashville eager to right the wrongs of the first game and the men went out and took care of business. Everyone played great in that game and we saw a lot of the patterns and skill drills executed throughout the game (thanks Coach Williams). I don't have a scoring summary but I know the Rock, Big O and Kibler put in at least two tries a piece. Captain Mark Miranda and Derek Wolfe were outstanding in defense and on the attack. Mike Gower had some good runs at the wing and of course Hodgen put in a great effort by scoring a try or two himself. Tommy and Meatloaf put in big efforts up front by keeping our scrums stable and some hard running and tackling. Ted the Dog, what can you say, he's there when you need him and always making an effort to keep the ball alive and playing any position he's asked to play (thanks Ted). Again, Chris Gower had a great day with the boot and Mark the Cezch is showing much improvement considering he's only been playing for a short time (stay focus Mark). Also, Hoops (Matt orMike, second row for Vandy) put in a good effort at second row and we definitely thank him for traveling with us this weekend. Last but not least, James Maxwell had an excellent day at scrumhalf and scored a couple of tries himself. Also, I would like to thank Cindy and Christian for making the trip and supporting their husbands and the club (a wee shot out to Iron Will, James and Cindy's son). Phil Theilke, the man that keeps on giving, drove the majority of the time to and from Savannah, provided water, arranged for hotel rooms and adult beverages. THANKS PHIL!
