Spring Season Wrap-up
- NRFC falls short of summit...USA Rugby DII National
Runners-Up
A long, hard successful season ended on a sour note
yesterday in Pittsburgh as a determined Connecticut
Yankees side defeated the boys from Music City 23-3
on a day that provided excellent playing conditions
but little luck.
After dispatching Boca Raton for the
third straight time, 13-7, on a rainy, slippery, hard
fought game, Nashville looked to reach the Summit and
hoist the trophy after failing two other attempts in
the early 90's.
But too many unforced errors in the
set pieces and an inability to break the gain line kept
Nashville from getting any go forward and establishing
any sustained attack.
Nashville went up 3-0 early on a VanVuuren
penalty kick, nearly punched in a try only to kick away
possession, then spilled another opportunity inside
the defenders' 5m. Then a long grubber the other way
on a misshandled ball and two missed scoops allowed
the Yanks a lucky dot down to take a 7-3 lead into the
half.
More misfortune in the second half as
Nashville gave up penalties in front of the posts to
give the Yanks a 13-3 lead. Connecticut provided Nashville
with plenty of good field position throughout the game
after loads of penalties, but they were constant spoilers
of the lineouts and completely negated our go-forward
potential.
Then, the back breaker with time running
out. A long counter by their winger who cut inside at
the 22, then threw the ball over his head to an oncoming
supporter who beat a would-be tackler to the corner
flag.
Update 4/17/04: Nashville Rugby Club has advanced
to the Final Four of the 2004 USA Rugby DII National
Championships and will face South rival Boca Raton for
the right to play for the title in Pittsburgh, June
5-6. The other two entrants are Connecticut Yankees
(#1 North East seed) and Haggis (#1 Pacific seed) out
of Utah.
Nashville outlasted a scrappy, well-drilled
Lancaster club 19-5 and ran out Red Mountain 48-5 to
earn their spot.
Both games featured substandard first
halves where Nashville struggled to get a proper rhythm
but kept it close going into each stanza. Both second
halves featured much more intense rucking and fluidity
from the pack and solid finishing from the backs.

Sunny, breezy day in Wilmington, NC. Late arrivals
from Raleigh had the team a little disoriented starting
the game. Couldn't gain continuity. Focus a
bit off. Then we started to get a good rhythm. Lineout
domination and subsequent phases set platform for several
tries. Rock and Bone were slicing
through the opposition with good support from the rest
of the pack. Lots of nice movement through the hands.
Then, bad breakdowns from the side to let them back
in the game. After stalling them on the 5m, they were
able to eventually push over for the try. Then a nice
play from scrum center for the home team. Misdirection
play, thought we had covered, moved to the wing who
raced down the sideline to dot it to give momentum to
the hometeam going into the half.
Second half, still a bit unsettled. Endured multiple
suspect high tackle calls and quick taps, defended nicely.
Then, NRFC regained composure, got back to the hard
work. Fitness and determination won out as defense produced
turnover ball which we quickly turned into runaway points
at the other end. With the home team's spirit broken,
Maxwell poured salt on the wound with a graceful sweeping
run on a scrum center pickup to end the game.

B-side more of the same. Continuous phases produced
easy ball for the backs to run in several tries with
all hands. Several nice presentations from Wolfe sent
Miranda through gaping holes. Kibler dragged a few guys
for a few feet then spun away for a bully try. Rock
sold a soft dummy and froze the fullback, allowing him
to trot in under the posts. Cayo found lots of work
on the wing. Gower refound his foot for conversions
and made easy work of backline plays (All hands every
time). Then Hodgen slotted some center conversions,
a drop kick conversion from Mitchell and Tommy Forbes
ended the game with a nice splitting of the uprights.
Now everyone's a kicker!
Late night in Raleigh after the on-field social produced
some good times in a local sportsbar, the definition
of "Free Admission- Some restrictions
apply" was learned. The Nashville Hawks led by
Bone, Cayo and Hodgen had the fraternity boys on the
NC State campus nervous about their lady friends. And
a missjudged leave time after 2 hours sleep and a slow
security checkpoint in the Raleigh airport caused some
to miss flights, only to enjoy the poetic stylings of
Derek Wolfe and the SWA Flight Attendants.

St. Louis Ramblers 7
After an almost two-hour lightening delay the game
begin under slippery conditions. At several points in
the match, lightening flashed on the horizon and luckily
we were able to safely play on. Despite the weather
and a last minute venue change, a pretty good crowd
was on hand as Nashville played the St Louis Ramblers
who compete in Division 1in the West Territory. They
were much larger in the pack, but the mobility of the
Nashville forwards proved to be one of the key factors.
For the second time in two weeks Nashville has had two
players score hat tricks. It was the backs that made
the most impact this weekend as Derek Wolfe and Cayo
Nicolau both scored 3 tries from the midfield.
Wolfe opened up the scoring with a try set-up by Evan
Bone. Pieter van Vuuren added this conversion kick and
then continued to kick a perfect 100% in the swirling
wind. Pieter finished 8-8 on conversions, 1-1 on penalty
kicks and was involved in several scoring movements.
Mark Miranda scored a much deserved try from his work
in the mid-field. Nashville lost focus and the Ramblers
turned a mishandled pass into a converted try. Nashville
on occasion took unnecessary chnaces with the ball -
looking to flick it around instead keeping it secure
in hand. Defense was good overall as the Ramblers forward
attack was stalled and their backs kept in check. Nashville
replied with the mid-field as Cayo and Wolfe both scored
tries making the halftime score 29-7. In the second
half it was more of the same as Cayo scored the next
two tries. Finally Chris Ryan's hard work was rewarded
when he touched down. Wolfe scored his third near the
end as bad weather moved in again.

With the Nash Bash U19 Tournament going on, a great
crowd was on hand as Nashville moved closer to securing
a spot in the South Championship which is to be held
in Naples Florida, April 24 - 25. The first eight minutes
of the match was competitive as Greenville maintained
early possession and was able to absorb the Nashville
attack for a short while. Chris "Rock" Ryan
scored the first try, then the floodgates opened. There
were six tries in the first half with Chris Gower making
4 of 6 conversions making the half time score 38 - 0.
It was an overall great team performance with some outstanding
tries. Cayo Nicolau was outstanding at flyhalf and he
scored the second try then added another try and two
conversion kicks in the second half. Josh Harris was
unstoppable with ball in hand as he ran in (3) a hit
trick of tries from prop. Adam Kibler was back from
the injured reserve and was on form scoring two tries
and assisting in numerous others. In fact one of the
best tries of the day came from a play involving Kibler
to Ryan back to Kibler who scored under the post.
In the second half Chris Ryan added two more tries
giving him a hat trick. Pieter Van Vuuren made an immediate
impact at Fullback scoring a try, making (4) conversions
and assisting in other tries. Derek Wolfe returned from
the injured list and had a solid performance on both
sides of the ball. He made several big tackles and was
an impact on offense - his efforts were rewarded with
a try. Hodgen Mainda finished off a beautiful team try
that was touched by many players including Captain Dace
Shuck whose outstanding support allowed for Hodgen to
score under the posts. I think that covers the scoring
but it was all the hard work that went in by the entire
team that made the victory possible. My hats off the
Greenville who have struggled this season with numbers,
but they played committed throughout the game.

Nashville lost the second game to a much improved Ft
Campbell team. Many of the soldiers had just returned
from Iraq and it was great to see them playing well
as a team even though it was at our expense. Poor tackling
was probably our biggest issue. There were some solid
performances from a number of players and there were
some less enthused efforts... especially when it came
to the hard work. In the end, we lacked enough inspired
support to match up with a totally self-sufficient second
side.

Started out the game a little tentative and couldn't
quite get solid hands on the bouncing ball on the fast
field, but gained our rhythm and focus the
started the attack. Sully's boot kept the Griffins continuously
in the shadow of their own goal practically all of the
first half. Early pressure
produced a penalty try, converted by Gower (3-0). Then
a jail break after fluid movement and gut passes and
rucks galore from the forwards saw Cayo feed Miranda
who offloaded to Maxwell in the try zone for the dot-down.
Gower converted (10-0). Another PK by Gower (13-0).
Then Fetterman sprang Cayo in the 20th minute. Gower
converted (20-0). 25th minute, after a nice set from
the forwards, the backs moved it to Mainda for the try.
Conversion made (27-0). Now it was the forwards turn.
A lineout on the 10 produced a maul that got stalled
and started to spin. All of a sudden, Bone and Shuck
were free and tangoed into over the line. Shuck dotted.
Conversion missed (32-0). End of Half.
2nd Half. The pack brought out the maul and solidified
rucking in the second half to produce less shaky ball
for Mitchell to serve. 10 minutes in, Miranda to Fetterman,
Conv made (39-0), then Rock to Gower to Bone to AJ in
the 53rd minute. Conv made (46-0). More attack and nice
movement from the whole team, put Shuck in a position
to score. After some nifty moves from the skipper, he
failed to notice he could have sat down in the try zone
for the easy score but elected to offload, producing
a penalty against the homeside for questionable intentional
knock-on. Maxwell from the 5m dots down on the quick
tap, Conv missed (51-0). More attack, a solid ruck on
the 5 meter allowed D. Mitchell sneak around the opposing
prop in the pickup and it under the posts in 63rd min.,
Conv made (58-0) Greenville gets a backs break and produces
an 80 meter try from a quick tap penalty as the defense
was slow to retreat. An overload saw them make some
nice support takes and the scrum half touched down for
the try in the 68th min. Conv made (58-7). Nashville
regained their focus and got back on the board, Rock
to Sully in the 70th minute, Conv made (65-7). Then
Rock sprang Mark for a 4 on 1, where he sent Cayo throught
in the 75th minute, Conv made (72-7). More pressure
and a bouncing ball. Cayo kicks to through and the Greenville
flyhalf tries to swat the ball out the back of the try
zone only to have Cayo beat it to the line for the downward
pressure in the 77th minute, Conv made (79-7).
Solid game. Excellent management from Sully and an
outstanding performance from the pack, practically stealing
every lineout and keeping
possession for nearly the entire game. Man of the Match
awarded to AJ, with honorable mention going to his engine
room mate, Larry Roland.

Nashville v. Charlotte B (matrix game)

Nashville 66
Charlotte B 5
The challenge was before us. Two undefeated teams so
far in matrix play. They had a large pack and looked
primed to give their home fans on the deck of their
clubhouse a good win against the visitors. But in keeping
with recent meetings between the two rivals, Nashville
would take the day. First few minutes were tense as
Nashville found it hard to gain possession. Then, Maxwell
intercepts Charlottes errant Backs pass
and offloads to Miranda in the 5th min, Conv made by
Gower (7-0). The forward dominance and scoring frenzy
was now on. Pack on the 10m after a solid maul and push,
where Larry pick and goes to score in the 10 minute,
Conv missed (12-0). Then, a demoralizing, crowd aweing
22 meter maul off a lineout finished with Roland stripping
the ball to score in the 15th minute, Conv missed (17-0).
Then, a nice back movement. Sully to Miranda to Cayo
in the 34th minute, Conv made (24-0). Then, Rock to
Miranda to Cayo in the 38th minute, Conv missed (31-0).
2nd Half. Charlotte takes the kickoff and immediately
puts Nashville on the defensive and keeps up the pressure
to produce a strong try from pack play in the 45 minute,
Conv missed (31-5). Charlotte looked to get back into
the game, but Nashville regained composure and Gower
found his boot again and converted a penalty in the
50th minute, (34-5). A well executed back play saw Sully
send Mainda to the line for the try in the 57th minute,
Conv made (41-5). More great back play after more punishing
pack defense and ball control. Cayo to Mainda in the
63rd minute, Conv missed (46-5). Another Gower PK converted
(49-5). Hodgen backs play in the 69th minute, Conv made
(56-5). Gower PK (59-5). Then from the 12 meter, Sully
dummies entire back line to score in the 70th minute
and bring a collective moan from the Charlotte fans,
Conv made by Gower (66-5).
20 Trys in 2 games, Outscored opponents 145-12, Had
only 2 Trys scored against us in 2 games and we had
9 different players score.
Gower was 5 for 5 in PK attempts and 14 out 20 (70%)
in Conversions.
Game Summary
Nashville B 14
Charlotte C 12
The B side Posse gathered looking to finish the weekend
with the Carolina sweep. Players like Irving Laos, Will
Diaz and Lou from Charlotte were looking to shake the
van legs off in there first action of the weekend and
get a taste of Nashville's dominance on the road trip.
But the side had trouble getting any continuity in the
first 20 minutes as their oversized pack continually
kept Nashville gasping for air from the choking goal
line. Inexperience and lack of patience produced several
consecutive penalties that threatened to raise the ire
of the referee. But resilience turned sure tries into
steals and clears to keep the scoreline clean to end
the half scoreless.
The second half start looked to get Nashville on the
board as the Dog (Balicki) snatched the opening kick
out of the air and the pack moved the ball all the way
to the 15 meter where Rock was sprung, but forced into
a knock-on just before the line keeping the Posse scoreless.
A bit more of the same from the first half, but we moved
the play to the middle of the field instead of the 22
in for the first 7 minutes. Then, a high kick from the
Charlotte center found bouncing room and escaped the
newly come-on fullback sub borrowed from Charlotte inside
the 22 and he scooped it up and dotted it easily for
the first score. Conversion made (0-7). Five minutes
later, a bad exchange from the back 3 produced a spill,
where a Charlotte forward got a huge pick from a mate
to streak down the sideline untouched. Conversion missed
(0-12). The ref later admitted our blocked player was
our Charlotte friend again, with white shorts and green
socks and he didn't notice till after that he was wearing
the black jersey.
5 minutes to go. The Posse gets refocused and turns
up the intensity perhaps fearing a 6.5 hour drive discussing
finishing the weekend on a sour note. Irving Legend,
Smokey Joe, Teflon Don, Igor and others find an inner
lion and start laying hits, setting rucks sealing ball.
Maxwell feeds Gower, who sends a streaking Rock through
the line who encounters tacklers and sends Miranda through
for the try. Gower converts (7-12). The posse receives
the kick and immediately gets in scoring position again
sucking the defense with a punishing ruck right of post
springing the backs for a sure try only to find our
borrowed friend is nowhere in sight for the final pass.
Lineout. One more attack. Again, super intense pack
play from Balicki, Roland and Lou after another solid
counter and good set from Ramoneda saw wide open backs
again only to finish with a forward pass that would
have given Diaz his first try and the tie. Another clear.
Lineout to Nashville. Pack keeps, goes rocket right,
then right again, then Gower sends Rock crashing over
for the try about 8 meters left of post.
Gower brothers meet for the tee transfer.
Little Gower asks big brother, "Is this for the
win?" He says, "Yep. Pressure's on."
Gower sets and stills his heartbeat after the last
5 intense minutes. The whole place is dead silent, the
fans on the deck, the dogs on the grass, the Dog and
his mates on the pitch. Gower, needing a break in the
tension, offers a finger to the lips and a shhhhhhhh!
Minimal laughter and some heckling ensues. Maybe it
was a bad idea. Gower resets, the pressure builds, then
slots it and the ref blows the game. Posse 14-Charlotte
12. You'd have thought it was for the June trophy. Hugs
and cheers all-around and a tremendous 3 cheers for
the Posse at the end.
Cheers!

Nashville v. Cape Fear (matrix game)
February 14, 2004
Gardens of Bardoeu, Nashville
NRFC 74
Cape Fear 10
Referee: Jerry McLemore
Nashville started the game with good pressure. 2 minutes
into the game Sully made a break up the middle from
the fly half position and off-loaded to Kibler for the
20 meter try. Hodgen makes conversion. Nashville kept
the offensive pressure on the travelers. Five minutes
into the game Cayo scored from good possession. We maintained
possession through several phases with good go forward.
Cape Fear was able to create some opportunities wide
but were unable to deliver the ball. Rock offloads to
Meat to Dace, who scores 16 minutes in. Hodgen makes
converion. Nashville continued to apply pressure. We
played some good defense when needed. For about ten
minutes we could not keep possession. Rock made a great
poach and the referee gave them the scrum. Cape Fear
made a penalty kick. Thirty minutes into the first half,
Josh scored on a great pick-n-go. Ugly miss by Hodgen.
With five minutes remaining in the half, the Pack scored
on a drive from a line out. I do not know who actually
scored this try. Sully converts. At half time, the score
was Nashville 31, Cape Fear 3.
In the second half, the rout was on. In the 8th minute,
Larry rambled for about 20 meters for the first score
of the half. Neal off-loaded to Cayo for the second
try. Larry was rambling again for his second try of
the day. Bone scored the next. Sully scored on a great
run by Hodgen. Neal Fetterman on the wing made another
break on the weak side, off loaded to James for another
try. We scored again on a right side of post play. On
the last play of the game, Cape took the quick from
a scrum and got the ball wide to a winger. The winger
made three Nashville tacklers miss and scored in the
corner. The Cape Fear Kicker made a nice kick from the
sideline to end the game. Final Score Nashville 74 to
10. The man of the match was Sully. He made great decisions
and controlled and moved the ball well all game.

scored late in the half to end the game at 27-7.
Game Summary
Date: 1-31-2004
Nashville RFC vs. Atlanta Renegades
Referee: Peabody
Location: Atlanta
Nashville RFC 27
Atlanta Renegades 14
On a beautiful day in Atlanta, Nashville RFC started
the 2004 campaign. The game started with both teams
shaking off the rust and looking for the pattern. The
first 20 minutes of the game could be summed up by missed
opportunities. The pattern created opportunities but
Nashville could not put it together. During that period
the defense was organized and was able to put good pressure
on the Renegades. At the 20 minute mark, Nashville was
rewarded for the good pressure defense. The Renegades
kicked the ball to relieve pressure. Nashville counter-attacked
and made a few tacklers miss. The ball moved through
several hands and Big O, Dave Osler, hit the space and
scored. Cayo made the conversion. Five minutes later,
the defense created another opportunity. The ROCK, Chris
Ryan, poached the ball in a tackle. Off the ruck Sully
made a break. He off loaded to Mark, who found Cayo
in some space in the center of the field. Cayo made
a few side steps and made a long pass to Hodgen hitting
the burst. Hodgen made a slight hesitation before hitting
the jets and scoring. The conversion was missed. 25
minutes into the game the score was Nashville 12 and
the Renegades 0. The Renegades came back hard on the
kickoff. Their pressure created a knock-on, which gave
them a good attacking platform in our half of the field.
The Renegades split their backs and brought the fullback
in the line. Nashville was slow to mark the backs. Off
the scrum the Gades went right and pop kicked the ball
back to the left of the scrum. One of their backs made
a nice play and caught the ball in the air as Hodgen,
our fullback, was going to catch it. His momentum and
speed allowed him to score in the left corner. The Gades
made the conversion making the score 12 to 7. Four minutes
later Cayo hit a penalty kick extending Nashville lead
to 15 to 7. The half ended with neither team being able
to create a good scoring opportunity.
In the second half Nashville again missed many scoring
opportunities. 16 minutes into the second half Nashville
had good pressure inside the Renegade 22 meter line.
From a ruck, Nashville went weak through the hands and
Bone made two tacklers miss to score the third try of
the day for Nashville. The conversion was missed. From
the go forward the Renegades kept the momentum going
and were able to punch it in for the try. They made
the conversion making the score 20 to 14. From that
point, with about 15 minutes remaining in the game,
Nashville controlled the game. The backs were able to
break the line several times on first phase. On one
first phase break, we were able to maintain possession
and run several attacking rockets. Adam Kibler scored
as a result of good pressure. Gower made the conversion.
The game ended with Nashville in control.
